Installing dashcam and placement

Managementlistener
Considering the technical aspects of installing a Blackvue dashcam, I'm looking for a comprehensive guide. What are the key steps in the installation process, and are there any common challenges or pitfalls to be aware of?

Tips for ensuring the optimal placement of the camera for the best field of view and recording quality would also be greatly appreciated, along with advice on managing cable routing and connections to the vehicle’s power supply.

Installing a dashcam?

  1. Mount the cam high, near the rearview mirror for the best view.
  2. Route cables along the headliner and down the A-pillar, and connect to the fuse box.
  3. Watch out for airbags when routing cables, and ensure the cam doesn't block your view!

Having installed a few dashcams, including Blackvue, here’s a more detailed guide. Begin by identifying the ideal spot for the camera; typically, this is as high on the windshield as possible without interfering with your view or the vehicle's sun visors. The goal is to have a clear view of the road without obstruction. Clean the area with an alcohol wipe before mounting the camera for a secure attachment.

Next, plan the cable route. The cleaner the cable management, the better the installation. Start by tucking the power cable into the headliner, working it around the passenger side, and down the A-pillar, being mindful to avoid the path of side airbags for safety reasons. Use trim removal tools to gently pry away the trim or rubber seals to hide the cables. When routing the power cable to the fuse box, select a fuse that is only active when the ignition is on to prevent battery drain. If you're using a hardwiring kit, you'll connect to the fuse panel; otherwise, a 12V socket will suffice.

For an optimal field of view, ensure that the dashcam lens is centered relative to the vehicle's front. The camera should capture the edges of your hood and the approaching road, but not too much of the sky, which could lead to exposure issues in the recordings.

A common challenge is managing excess cable. Use cable clips or adhesive-backed cable holders to secure any slack and prevent it from hanging down or interfering with the vehicle’s controls.

Lastly, don’t forget to carefully check your vehicle's manual for any specific instructions regarding cable routing, especially in relation to airbag locations. Every vehicle is different, and you want to avoid any modifications that could affect its safety features or resale value.
